Still editing this guide. Should be done soon...

Simple countering guide using Opera.

Firstly you want to know the speed of the attack, so just click the incomming and label it.

1. How to counter Light Cavalry attacks with Axemen/Ram.
2. How to counter Ram/noble attacks with Axemen/Light Cavalry.
3. How to counter someone whois hitting your Rally point with Catapults.

1. Someone is sending Light cavalry at you, and you don't want to counter them risking your Light Cavalry by attacking back, canceling one second behind(risking your troops coming back before the incomming), then going to the next tab to click 'ok'... Pretty simple, counter them with Axemen and Light Cavalry or maybe even ram, but your axe are slower than Light cavalry, so you're going to send them before the incomming lands.

1a. Open another tab with all your Axemen/Light cavalry ready to attack the player on the 'ok' screen.

1b. The incomming speed is Light Cavalry, and to find the 'Duration' time you just need to click on the incomming, and it'll be there.

The duration from his village to your village is 2:30 by Light Cavalry speed.
The duration from your village to his village is 3:00 by Axemen speed.

Go to your next tab which you made in 1a., and put ur cursor over the 'ok' button, then keep your mouse in that position then click '1' on your keyboard, so you go back to the other tab, and soon as the incomming hits 30 seconds, quickly go to your next time by clicking '2', the clicking 'enter' or your left mouse button.

1c. If the difference between the two are 50 seconds, then you click 'ok' when the incomming is at 50 seconds, but it will only work if your troop speed is a longer duration, than the incomming. If you want counter with your troops being the shorter duration, then look at 2.

2. Someone is attacking you with Ram speed, and you want to counter with Axemen/Light Cavalry, because you don't want to risk doing a bad counter, and losing your troops.

2a. Firstly open a tab with incomming, and a quick way it by clicking the middle mouse button on the incomming, or holding ctrl + left shift, and left clicking the incomming. You'll end up with a screen like this;

2b. Now go back to your first tab, and dodge the incomming, then set up an attack of all your Axemen/Light Cavalry. Now look at the tab you made in 2a., and it should look something like this;

Yes, you can see there troops returning, and it counts down for you, so you can now just wait until it the right time for you to send your attack. 10 seconds before it's time for you to send, go back to your first tab, put your cursor over the 'ok' button, then click '2', then get ready to click '1' then 'enter' or your left mouse button. Remember; Troops returning always return back at :000 unless canceled, so always try countering on the same second, as it's possible to dodge a counter that's not on the same second. If the counter is on the same second, then it's impossible to dodge, as the page refreshes on the same second.

3.

Thanks to Miggy aka Roy middleton helping me with step 3. While using the step 3. counter I advise you listening to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDXH8Lx-XG0 while countering. It helps alot. BTW Yes, it is Miggy MCing

Just so I'm clear on the terminology:
countering is the same as backtiming?
I've never heard it called countering before this thread

Just some notes, many of you probably already know this:

1. If your opponent is using ram speed and you plan on backtiming with all your troops (ie. ram speed as well) - then you can scout your opponent and turn it into a backtime script. Send your troops out to a barb, or send+withdraw so that they return just after your opponent hits you, then use the backtime script to send one right back at him.

2. Have cats hit his rally point shortly before his troops return, so that he can't dodge your backtime.

Thats a nice tactic.

Another variation of the cats is to send an attack to land less than 1 second before the attacker returns home, so that his page refreshes and it is more difficult to dodge. Of course there are ways around this, but it makes it more difficult if nothing else.

This is countered by demolishing your own rally point and timing the rebuild for after the suspected cat attack arrives, but before the troops return home.

Yep, that's why you hope that either they aren't gonna cat your rally, or that your HQ has a higher level, so faster rebuild time for your rally point.

In order for countering to work, you must remember to dodge the incoming attack!

counter the counterer :)

get a tribemate to send an attack (a fake will do) to land at the time that the counter to your troops should be sent.
