For the past couple of years development on TW Stats has been fairly stagnant, mainly due to lack of server resources and problems coping with the huge amount of data we need to track. However, after a series of hardware upgrades in October 2010 we decided to focus more on active development of the site. Today sees the first series of improvements go live on twstats.co.uk. If you find any problems, have any questions or would like to suggest improvements please click here (link goes to tw.net).

You can view a live example of the major new features described below by clicking on the image to the right.

Improved archiving

One of the most requested features is a more comprehensive system for looking up old players. We’ve now made changes to several sections of the site in order to make this information more easy to find. When performing a global player search you’ll also be able to see a list of the player’s past worlds, as well as when they last played the world. We also show this information when viewing a player’s profile under the “Player’s past worlds” section. Lastly, we’ve added a rankings page for past players which can be accessed by clicking on ‘View old players’ from the world portal.

In the old version of TW Stats we tracked player and tribe history for a total of 28 days. It is now possible to view up the last 90 days of history by clicking on ‘View player history’ on a player or tribe profile. We’ve been tracking this extra data for several months now, so the full 90 days are already available for viewing.

New feature: Village growth tracker
<a href="http://www.twstats.co.uk/uk7/index.php?page=village&id=293" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.twstats.com/nv/vh.png" style="float: right; border: 2px solid #cfbd99; margin: 15px 0 0 5px" /></a>
This is something we’ve wanted to do for quite some time, but never could implement before our recent server upgrades. Tracking point changes for 90 million villages over 460 worlds is quite an intensive process.

When viewing a village profile on TW Stats you’ll now be able to see every point change as well as the time from the last point change. Since TW Stats now updates hourly, this is fairly accurate. Because of this we’re also able to make guesses as to what building the village has upgraded. As the village becomes larger you can use this tool to make fairly accurate guesses as to what the village owner is focusing on and what their current building levels are.

You’ll notice that you can click and choose an upgrade from the list of upgrade possibilities. This currently has no functionality, it’s just for your convenience so you can easily work out what people have built. However, if you copy the URL in the address bar after making the changes and then return to the same URL at a later date, your choices will be remembered.

Improvements to the map
<a href="http://static.twstats.com/nv/map.png" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.twstats.com/nv/mapsmall.png" style="float: right; border: 2px solid #cfbd99; margin: 15px 0 0 5px" /></a>
The map is one of the most used tools on TW Stats so we’ve focused on improving it and adding some more functionality.
If you’re making a map that includes background neutral villages (Markers only unchecked) you can now choose to use the ‘Dull background’ option. This will add a transparent gray layer between the neutral villages and any markers you add, making it easier to see the different villages.

Additionally we’ve added a “Larger markers” option. This draws any custom markers you’ve added in a larger size than default.

We’ve made a couple of interface improvements map too. You can now delete markers if you decide you don’t want them. It’s also possible to quickly import a list of tribes, players or villages using the import functionality.

Click on the image to the right to see an example of a map generated using these new options (top tribes on en54 at time of writing).

Tribe conquer stats
<a href="http://www.twstats.co.uk/uk1/index.php?page=tribe&id=273&mode=conquer_stats" target="_blank"><img src="http://static.twstats.com/nv/tribestats.png" style="float: right; border: 2px solid #cfbd99; margin: 15px 0 0 5px" /></a>

Ennoblements are the main metric used to measure the success of a tribe so we’ve added a new feature to tribe profiles. Instead of having to search through a tribe’s conquers yourself to compile stats you can click on ‘conquer stats’ to view a number of interesting compiled statistics.

This includes gaines/losses against each tribe, each player, which tribe members have gained/lost the most villages, and so on. Oh, and there are also pretty pie charts.

Other minor improvements

There are over 100 minor changes, improvements and new features in this update, but here’s a few of the more interesting and useful ones:

  • On tribe and player profiles you can now click on ‘View conquer periods’ to view a breakdown of their conquers by day, week, month or year.
  • The conquer map now lets you choose colours in the same fashion as the standard map.
  • TW Stats will now log and show a tribe’s creation date and disband date (if the tribe no longer exists).
  • When viewing conquers, a new ‘date range’ option has been added. This allows you to view conquers from any time period you wish.
  • When viewing conquers (and in a couple of other places on the site) you can hover your mouse over a tribe or player to view some basic information about them.
  • When viewing a tribe’s member list we’ve added a ‘total’ column to display each members weekly change in whichever metric you’re displaying. In addition to this you can hover your mouse over the changes to view the member’s metric at the time.
  • When viewing a player or tribe’s history, you can hover your mouse over the numbers to view the difference from last time.

In addition to all the new features we’ve made some changes which should significantly decrease the page load time.

We hope you enjoy the new version of TW Stats. As with any update, there may be a few minor problems at first. If you find any problems, have any questions or would like to suggest improvements please click here (link goes to tw.net).

Thanks to everyone that volunteered to test the new version, with special credit to Allyboo, FrailBeauty, Typhi and Tracey for giving feedback on the early prototypes of new features.

Try out the new TW Stats now!

Cheers,
Morthy
