Is this possible? I've read a few things that indicate that it is, but assuming that the victim of it is left with nothing and has to just start the game again, it seems a bit harsh that the game should allow it.

That's kind of the point of the game. You get a village, build up, get a nobleman, and slaughter another player's troops and (all things going to plan) steal their village. If they only have one village, then yeh, they have to restart. If they have more'n one village, then they lose the one that gets nobled, but keep the others and keep on playing.
It's tribal wars. S'a mean, mean game out there. If you want a nice game, play sim city. >)
