Military sub turn- attack on teal village to the southeast

Men/equipment to be used:

8 from elite fighting squad - experienced
40 warriors - experienced

equipped with:
50 iron shortswords.
42 leather chestplates
50 rectangular shields
50 good yew shortbows
50 iron daggers
Fire arrows for 3 volleys
unlit torches
fire lighting equipment.
and with my
battering ram - cover it in black cloth for the journey..

Right so we want to travel to that thin strip of forest north of the teal tribe, before this attack I want my 2 mounted scouts to have checked out the village from the outskirts of the forest that surrounds it, looking for defenses, sentries, etc and to try and estimate how big it is.
So yeah, as we arrive at the forest bit to the north, see what the scouts report back and I will formulate the plan from then.

You send out your scouts. They report the village has a wooden wall, 2 gates, several watchtowers spread on the wall. They towers look recently constructed. The wall is manned by several guards. Your scouts believe they were spotted.

(Woah! Maybe those already pillaged villages and the story about siege are being taken seriously!)

Right.

So our force will be commanded in groups of 5, with a person from elite fighting group commanding a group each and champion being overall commander.

Lets test the waters a bit. Get the men to move just out of bowrange with shields locked. Then move into bowrange, front row hold shields forward, second row hold shields up and archers behind will attempt shots at the guards on the walls. Ram will keep its black cover on.

Your men step into what they'd estimate the max bow range. Several arrows get lodged in the shields. Your archers try shooting back but they have to aim at the sky for their shortbows to effectively reach there and cross the wall's upper edge.

Current situation looks pointless with no casualities yet. The alarm is being sound.

get them to move into an effective bow range for us and try the same thing.

Your men try pushing closer. After closing in some 15 meters, the arrow fire suddenly doubles in intensity and numbers. It seems they've brought up more men to the wall and also switched to better arrows as they are now easily lodging into the shields and often even penetrating it.

2 men have fallen under the barrage. Your archers do their best to return the fire but they are shooting in uncoordinated barrage so timing the shields is a very hard task. You've counted 3 of their's getting hit.

Righto, lets pull back some out of arrow range, slowly of course with shields still held in position.
Lets get the ram into play. 10 people will be operating the ram (5 on each side) While the other 36 will be solely shielding from above(and the sides if we can get hit from there +) Hopefully this should provide a very strong roof over the heads of these guys. When we are actually moving towards the gate we will obviously need shields infront too. Once we reach the gate the guys operating the ram will swing it on its ropes with as much force as possible and begin battering the gate.

The arrow barrage continues. You see another 2 of your men fall.

Your men bring the ram to the edge of their range and start pushing it towards the gate. The enemy brings up even more men to the wall, you'd guess there are at least 40 now. The arrow fire is a mix of well made iron arrows, bronze arrows and even flint arrows. Your men start the long push towards gate. The enemy is spreading the men on top the wall to allow them to attack you easily from the side. Once your men reach the 35 metre mark, there are fire arrows being shot at the ram. Several hit and embed themselves in the ram.

Your men's shields are faltering in that range and from being shot at head on.

You've lost 3 men from the barrage.

Continue the push forward, get the team leaders to shout encouragement for the men to hold firm, hopefully their experience should help them in such a situation. Ignore the fire arrows for now, if the fire starts to spread, we can simply use it to set fire to their gate anyway.

The enemy turns focus of fire to your team leaders. They get 1 and wound another slightly on the arm. It seems they're targeting the leaders now.

The ram takes several fire arrows; the fire is spreading slowly but surely.

You notice the enemy withdraw men from the wallonce your men reach the 10 metre mark.

You've lost 1 group leader and 3 men.

Just before your men get close enough to roll in the ram and start ramming the gate, the gate is opened. Not a minute after the enemy charges out, they're armed with swords & shields. There are dozen archers on wall.

ok, we can assume we are slightly prepared for this as it takes a bit of time for the gate to just open. Get the men to join shields and begin charging into the enemy, pushing with their shields and then lunging with swords - something they have practiced a hell of a lot over the past couple of years. They will use superior numbers to push the enemy back inside the gate, ensuring that the gate cannot be closed again.

The two charging forces meet at the gateway. Your men's charge proves superior and the enemy is pushed back, deeper into the village. The fighting seems to be going completely in your forces favour; the enemy is losing more & more ground and your men are on the offensive while the enemy is fighting defensively and losing ground. Your men reach the inside of the wall. It is your remaining 33 men against the enemies 15.

Thinking victory right within their grasp, your men press the charge but are suddenly forced to stop, the archers have finally opened fire, aiming at your men's exposed backs. The first barrage kills 7 men. The temporary panic allows the enemy warriors to start pushing back before your champion restores the men's spirits and orders them to form up back to back. The direct fire threat has been dealt with but there are still archers that are firing from the sides or above(tower). The enemy warriors are also trying to attack with everything they have.

Judging the situation hopeless your champion orders a retreat.

Your casualities: 2 elites, 15 warriors.
Enemy casualities: 21 warriors, 7 were left standing.
Total casualities in this siege(you): 2+3+4+17= 26

Have the blacksmith melt down the Large Iron cooking pot and use it to make the boss (Which incidentally is just the centre piece I want, shaped like my emblem as seen at the top of the page, it is the centre point of the shield) for the Scutums. Then have my blacksmith and weapon makers look at the Scutums to determine the best way to recreate them.

Have scouts continue to look for mineral deposits as they hunt.

Construct a watch tower just outside of the walls; manned by 3 people with 2 on duty at any 1 time so if they are killed there is 1 more to take over. A fire should be kept lit on it so they can see, and place the copper bell up there too.

Continue to make Alcohol substances, 10 more barrels. I also want my workers to collect straw and pile it up outside the walls so it can be used later.

Make 150 Flint javelins and train my warriors how to throw them properly.

Construction of stone wall started. 25% done, gathered supplies used all up. Well that isn't very good.

Farms expanded. Your total farmlands have become very large and new farms are being put up quite far from the village. Does it look like the West Country yet?

Jobs distributed.

Your craftsmen made some tools for personal use of people. What tip will you use for the arrows & spear? And how many? (R) Um...hard stone? And enough for all my current guardsmen again. Empasis on again.

You ... adopt? the wolf cub. Cool, I'll call him Rex.

Your emissary does not return. Well that's impolite, good job I got another this turn...I think.

Bold.

Domestic Actions:

At the end of this year, the 58 slaves from the first batch will be able to choose whether
they want to stay in our village voluntarily or they can leave, its up to them. Emphasis on the end of the year, ill still be using them this year.

Saddle maker, we need 15 more saddles...YAA YAA.

Lets encourage the strongest looking male to mate with the females, rather than all of them. Could give us some better offspring.

Recruit 5 more people to elite fighting group, these should be people who excelled in the last battle from the warrior group, these will then be replaced by others who want to be warriors.

New horses will be assigned. We got 6 more horses this year. 5 of them will go to the elite fighting squad, now all of the elite fighting squad should have a horse. The other one will go to another scout. Horse training as usual, with bows especially, but also with these new longer spears, and also with sword and shield from horseback.

Get the guy making the circular shields to make 15 more, from now on lets call them "horse shields" to make things simple. Then I want him to make 25 long iron tipped spears, which ill call "cavalry spears". Lets try about a bit over 2.5 metres long and see how that does.

Blacksmith work: - 10 more of those helmets and 10 iron pickaxes, 4 iron lumberaxes and 26 iron shortswords. I also want to get two apprecntice blacksmiths training up. The apprentices along with one of my experienced blacksmiths will be doing all the above jobs. Meanwhile my other experienced blacksmith will be working on making some iron chainmail, for chest coverage that is. Im sure he knows the general idea of what he is trying to create but essentially he is stamping out small rings from sheets of iron, which are then linked together en mass for the shape of an armoured vest. Get him to try this out this turn, making any tools he think might be useful to make the process faster too.

Fletchers lets make another 120 good yew shortbows, and assume all these years when i havent specificed you have been stocking up our arrow supplies >.>

Get 3 guys working on improving our shields. We want them slightly curved, so I think we will need some hot steam to gradually do this. Lets get a very large saucer of water and a fire underneath it, hang the shields over the saucers to get the steam to hopefully make the shields more co-operative in bending them slightly. We will probably need multiple fires to get this going at any sort of rate. Then get them to cover the front of the shields in brown fabric and get the blacksmiths to create an iron bump stuck on to the front of the shields. This can be used to inflict damage on enemies when pushing forward with shield.

Get warrior numbers back up to 40 by getting cantidates throughout the tribe.
Now I can train warriors full time as it is their sole job. This year focus on shieldwork, and making themselves resistant to arrows. They will practice manoevers where the front row hold shields in front locked together, the sides hold their shields outwardsand in the middle shields are held in the air to cover their heads. Sort of like a square turtle. They will also practice doing this formation, and at the call of somebody, shields will be brought down - people in the middle will quickly fire a volley of arrows and the shields will be thrust up again. Each member in our elite fighting group will be a commander of 4 warriors, this will be the command structure. The Champion will be the overall battle commander answering to me.

Finish with making the inner wall. Ensure the gaps are left for the two sets of thick oak gates that will be put in them. Just continue doing what we are doing basically. Hopefully we can get the inner bit finished this year, other people even if not specifically assigned for this job will be encouraged to help when they can and lets get warriors, elite fighting group and myself to help with a lot of heavy lifting which will help with strength training.
So the main people we are using are:
89 slaves
60 people

Lets get 10 people to start moving our village ..over a bit.
I want to move our village over to the left, in the big gap against the mountain that there is, so essentially it will still have its back and side to a cliff face. So obviously this might seem pretty stressful for some people but just explain its for the future safety and whatnot. So essentially we will do it bit by bit, go through the houses, get the family to move their stuff out, take it apart and move it down to the left in the big space. (left if your looking straight at it, lets call it west to be precise). Itll be more of a gradual process but hopefully throughout the year we can get most of the houses moved.. The houses will start being built as close to the cliff face as possible, and shouldnt go out too far from it methinks.

Get our 3 mounted scouts to go east in search of more horses, look near fresh water sources and grasslands that look good for grazing. We will try to tempt the horses over with food and hopefully the fact we have horses..bring the horsetrainer on the back of one of our horses, hopefully he has a way with them by now and some sort of calming, witchcraft....technique

Diplomacy:

Right we are doing a trade with dan. We are trading 10 iron helmets, 10 iron picaxes and five yew longbows. in exchange for 3 horses. The meeting place is near the ruins of the black dot to my west. DAn brings 20 soldiers and ill bring my 20 warriors who will be armed with armour - sword and bow. Goods will be handed over and we'll take horses home.

Trade with pink tribe to the east, trading 16 iron swords, 4 iron lumberaxes in exchange for 5 horses. Bring a couple of guards but ensure everything is friendly and civil. Meeting like midway between villages, towards the end of the year as this stuff is being made this year, some of it anyway.

You make a mill. Lumbermill?

What shall you grow on your new farm lands? (R)
6 farmers can farm turnips, 28 can farm wheat and the rest of them (did i manage to find someone who would want to trade barley? I mean GRAIN, not seed of a dinosaur >:/) barley if i got some (and answer was yes! My people shall be drunk and sober!)

Tournament held. Your men do not have much idea how to use shotels so they just use them as regular swords. Training commencing.

Shotels are used as a slashing weapon, it can be used both as a piercing and slashing weapon by slashing. You can hack with the tip or draw with a slash that can cut of limbs due to the design. Its main strength is that it is much more effective against shield wielders (against all kinds of shields as i can think of) because of the bow, it can lure itself behind the enemies shield over, under (not the best idea practically) and from the side. It is also fast to use.

http://i51.tinypic.com/fub7zc.jpg

8 Good chariots made.

40 elm bows made. Spears use what tip? Shields what shape/design? (R)

Spears use flint for now and Shields will be rectangular, my other shields are round btw.

Your make 69 tumblers.

Your weavers make 15 blankets with some patterns.

5 rings made with 6 amulets.

5 people total answered your call to teach how to make beer.
Gift will be a carpet for them all, does not sound like much today but before that would probably have been a luxury product.

You find a village willing to trade 3 iron pickaxes and 4 iron axes. They however send your merchant back with his 20 guards, stating they are offended you'd send a force of an small invasion party when you just wanted to trade.

That is rude of them in my opinion, which tribe was it?
