Prostitution??

I'm sure everyone would be happy to get a female's opinion on this, so lets do this.

While I am not a fan of prostitution, I think that it should be legalized. As KV said, legalizing it would help stop the exploitation of prostitutes.

These women (or men) don't grow up telling their parents every night "I want to be a prostitute when I grow up!" They are just like you and me, wanting to be an engineer, a lawyer, a doctor, a writer for Vogue. They turn to prostitution because they come across an economic situation where they do not have money. I am not going to lie, many of them get to this position because of bad habits they have (smoking, drinking, pot, heroin, etc.), but some get there because their parents lost their job, the stock market went bad, a boyfriend screwed them over, or some other reason.

I do not believe legalizing prostitution will prevent women being exploited.
Like you said the majority of prostitutes find themselves involved in the crime because of their dire economic situation .
I would say very few do it because they have a life time ambition to do it... they do it out of necessary or pressure. Many are forced into it and lead horrendous lives in fear of those who are in control of them .

You really , really think legalizing prostitution will help these women ? You think the people who have illegally transported children and women over to this country (UK) and forced them into prostitution will turn into a legitimate business looking out for the needs of their staff ? They prey on the weak and vulnerable and abuse them... Legalizing prostitution isn't liberating women .... not at all .... it is saying there are people who can legally abuse you ... yes there may be measures in place to protect the women but really ... these women live in fear .. they are desperate , you think they will report their employer !! That is even if they become a legitimate business and don't become even more underground than they already are, and when they are caught .. there will be less laws in place to prosecute them with.
Many women /men are abused in their own homes by those closest to them , undetected due to fear and control , legalized prostitution would be no different .

There will be the exceptional case where women feel they have the right to sell their bodies for sex , let me offer something new to this debate !! - Morality !! Just because people want to do something doesn't make it right.
STD's happen as I believe it isn't meant for a person to sleep with multiple partners .. that another issue but everything has a consequence and sleeping around is not good for your body , personally I don't think it is good for any part of a person to be involved in , if it was something that made women feel empowered and liberated why do people need to force people into it ?

The whole issue of sleeping with multiple partners is an issue in itself but to be paid for sex is in my opinion , wrong.

I also think the thrill of prostitution is in that it is illegal ... it's riskee ! Anyone can go to a club pick up a girl and have sex .. but the danger of doing something seedy and wrong appeals to those who use prostitutes ... so therefore the underground prostitution of which the people involved are most vulnerable and at risk would still exist to supply the need .

I do not believe legalizing prostitution will help those most at risk , if anyone. I think morally it is wrong... I am aware men are also victims of this too .

Why? You think porn and prostitution is stupid? Great. Not a valid reason to make industries illegal that create jobs for women. :icon_neutral:

I'm not looking to convince anyone. I'm saying what I think. If you don't agree, I'll send you a sticker or something equally fun.

A lot of women are cheated, guaranteed for a better life(what Lisa said) only to learn they'll end up as prostitutes. :icon_neutral: Also, they could be just fooled what they thought was going to be the man of her life.

2-3 years ago when I went back to my country (2 months vacation) I was offered by someone (I know he has one, and she has a baby too) to go (in the near future) to an ex-USSR country, find a girl and bring her to Italy. Once there, with the help of that person we were going to turn the girl into prostitution. Is true.

I don't believe that prostitution should be legalised, this would only give the impression that it is being encouraged. The way that prostitution is currently being dealt with is to actively pursue and stop street walkers, and not arresting those working from homes in established red light districts unless the situation requires it. The police claim that this allows them to keep an eye on those working from the safer environment of a house or apartment and that actively pursuing all forms of prostitution and completely outlawing it, will only push it underground and put more women in danger. Scotland Yard believe that this is the best way to tackle the situation and i have to agree with them.

Legalising prostitution will boost the number of women on the streets, stretching our police forces further, licenses, id cards, public fury over the increased taxes to cover these costs, increase in crime that inevitably comes with prostitution, increase in court time taken up by related rape and attack cases... have i made my point? Eventually everyone would turn round and say, what we need to do is decrease the number of working women, to which the solution would be... make it illegal.

Prostitution = More jobs/More women in the working force. Why is that bad again? I need to be reminded I think.

As long as you're not forced into it, it's completely legul in the UK.

I was referring to the laws in the UK.

As long as you're not forced into it, it's completely legul in the UK.

Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003, it is an offence to cause or incite prostitution or control it for personal gain.

The 1956 Sexual Offences Act bans running a brothel and it's against the law to loiter or solicit sex on the street.

In some countries it is legal and regulated.

Absolutely right, Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities in the world, i have been there many times and have lots of friends there. But with respect you cannot just take the laws of another country and apply them in the UK...

London has the worst crime statistics of any capital in the EU, adding to that would not be a good thing
